The University of Chichester excelled in the UK-wide Research Excellence Framework (REF) with results announced in December 2014 revealing that 90% of our research is rated as internationally recognised or higher and 15% classified as ''world-leading''.

Innovative proposals for MPhil/PhD study are invited in a range of research areas. The strategic drive behind the studentships is to attract excellent students to conduct collaborative MPhil/PhD projects with the following named third party organisations: Black Cultural Archives; Outside In; West Sussex Record Office and Tangmere Aviation Museum.

The subject area of History and Politics will accept applications from postgraduate research students in the following area:

PhD Area: Outside In (OI) (2 of the 4 bursaries to be advertised)

The fee waiver is engaged in collaboration with the national ''self-trained art'' charity Outside In, based in Sussex. Applications are invited from qualified students wanting to write a thesis on an aspect of the following: ''untrained or outsider art'' (any aspect); interfaces between traditional and non traditional arts; artist-specific studies on key figures from the field; critical analysis on heritage and curatorial practice in the field of untrained art; cross-over art schools, e.g. ''The Hairy Who''/Chicago Imagists; critical theory informed studies of untrained art opening the field to gender studies, post-colonial studies, socio-economic access to art production and reception. Candidates wanting to work on European-based outsider art will need a working knowledge of the relevant language, e.g. German, French, Italian etc.

Informal enquiries are welcomed by Professor Hugo Frey, Head of Humanities via email at H.Frey@chi.ac.uk

We are particularly interested in high calibre applicants who want to play an active role in the continued development of our research environment. Applicants should have a good first degree or MSc/MA qualification. Every applicant should have good quantitative and/or qualitative research methods skills appropriate to their discipline, and should be a well-organised, self-motivated researcher.

The other two PhD areas will be added in due course.
