Based within the Customer Relations Service, the Independent Visitor Scheme (IVS) supports the Council’s priorities as Corporate Parent. The scheme matches volunteer Independent Visitors with children and young people looked after by West Sussex County Council who have little/no contact with their birth families or where it is considered in their best interests for them to have an adult outside of the professional network working with them, to provide a supportive relationship in line with the provisions set out in the Children Act 1989 and Children and Young Persons Act 2008.

The IVS Coordinator is responsible for delivery of all aspects of the service at the direction of the IVS Manager. There are 4 key distinct areas of work; recruitment, assessment and training of prospective Independent Visitors; matching Independent Visitors to children/young people; supervision of and duty of care towards Independent Visitors; safeguarding children and young people through the processes, procedures and monitoring that is undertaken in all areas of the Scheme.

The Independent Visitor Scheme is a part of the wider Customer Experience Team, which will be the team that brings the customer to the heart of service provision and will provide a voice for the customer. The key objective of the team is to deliver an excellent ‘customer experience’ through the development of ‘efficient customer journeys’ within financial constraints.
