"I never felt I had the confidence to work with children with disabilities, but I love it and think I am really quite good at it. I wish I had done it years ago!" (social worker comment)

The Disability team is a specialist team based within the Family Support and Protection service. We provide a holistic service for children with disabilities including assessment, planning and intervention for children in need (S.17), children in need of protection (S.47) and children looked after. We work closely with multi-agency partners and also have a successful specialist early intervention service - CHOICE - that supports children and families at an earlier stage, including the use of direct payments.

Our aim is to ensure that there is an improvement in outcomes for children in need and their families that is sustainable. The child's experience is at the heart of our service: which means that everything we do and the way we do it can be explained in terms of impact and best outcome for the child.

You will join a dedicated team of social workers and specialist family workers who are passionate about improving outcomes for adolescents and their families. You will be part of a small practice group, who work together with access to group and reflective supervision to deliver effective support to young people and their families. We will help you to develop your skills and confidence in working with children with disabilities.

Our practice framework is based on Signs of Safety underpinned by knowledge of attachment and the impact of developmental trauma on children and families - all staff receive extensive training and support to implement these approaches. As a social worker you will also have access to Research in Practice and Community Care Inform and are guaranteed a minimum of 5 days per year CPD, including accredited training leading to Diploma and Masters qualifications.
